Bellevue Hospital Center, in Manhattan, is renowned for its emergency services but also provides ongoing patient care in a 25-story building. Since 1968, the New York University School of Medicine has directed clinical services for the hospital, providing more than 1,200 attending physicians and more than 500 residents and interns.

It is the oldest public hospital in the country, having opened in 1736 with six beds. Bellevue had the country's first wikipedia:nursing school and first maternity ward, and today includes six intensive care units, centers for microsurgery, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and pediatric, adolescent behavioral, and psychiatric services. In cooperation with the New York City Department of Education, the hospital operates a school for emotionally disturbed children and teens.
