The station was originally named "Gallery Place" because it is situated under the [National Portrait Gallery]. The "Chinatown" suffix was added in the [1980s] - the station's main entrance lets out right beneath the [Chinatown] arch - and the station may eventually be called Gallery Place-Chinatown/[MCI Center] because that arena is directly above the station.
