In 1969, Julius and Harriet Wiggins wanted to unite the [deaf community] within the [United States], which was not as [cohesive] as [modern technology] allows it to be today. With the help of their three teenagers, they started a four-page [newsletter] from their New Jersey home. They also hoped to improve the [employment] and [social] conditions of [deaf] people around the country by increasing [education]al opportunities and readers' [literacy]. Today, Silent News is generally about 45 pages long and covers world, national, and community [news], as well as arts, sports, and health issues for the deaf and [deaf-blind] communities.
